Cusp of Carabelli: Observations of an Odontogenic Trait
نویسندگان
چکیده
The “Cusp of Carabelli” (COC) is a non-functioning, accessory cusp positioned on the mesiopalatal surface of permanent maxillary molars, predominately first molars and primary second molars. This supplemental cusp has been studied for several hundred years regarding size ranges, ethnic and racial distributions and genetic and/or environmental etiologies. The content of this report will explore the historical significance and specific terminologies applied to this unique cusp; as well as the morphogenesis, classification, incidence and frequency occurrences among human populations. Although the COC has been relegated to a sometimes obscure morphological curiosity or distantly studied trait characteristic of the human dentition/s, interestingly its existence could speculatively be associated with accessory internal tissue contents, carious lesion formation and appropriate restoration, or genetic trait expressions for population discriminations. *Corresponding author: Barry M Owens, Division of Operative Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dentistry, College of Dentistry, University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, 875 Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, Tel: +1 9018320472; E-mail: [email protected] Citation: Owens BM, Phebus JG, Blen BJ, Redmond DC (2016) Cusp of Carabelli: Observations of an Odontogenic Trait. Frequency and variability of dental morphology in deciduous and permanent dentition of a Nasa indigenous group in the municipality of Morales, Cauca, Colombia
OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency, variability, sexual dimorphism and bilateral symmetry of fourteen dental crown traits in the deciduous and permanent dentition of 60 dental models (35 women and 25 men) obtained from a native, indigenous group of Nasa school children of the Musse Ukue group in the municipality of Morales, Department of Cauca, Colombia. METHODS This is a quantitative, des...
متن کاملEnamel thickness and the topography of the enamel-dentine junction in South African Plio-Pleistocene hominids with special reference to the Carabelli trait.
This study explores the internal morphology of early hominid teeth using high-resolution computed tomography. Data on Carabelli feature size, enamel thickness, and the topography of the enamel-dentine junction are considered together in order to examine the relationship among these variables in the maxillary molars of gracile and robust australopithecines from South Africa. In particular, one a...
متن کاملThe relationship between Carabelli's trait and the size, number and morphology of the maxillary molars.
AJXHOUGH the importance of Carabelli's cusp in phylogenetic studies and for primary racial classification is generally acknowledged, the exact significance of this variable trait remains obscure.and controversial (MOORREES, 1957; KORENHOF, 1960). In this report we examine the " progressive " versus " regressive " aspect of the controversy on which opinions have remained sharply divided for almo...
متن کاملModel of Tooth Morphogenesis Predicts Carabelli Cusp Expression, Size, and Symmetry in Humans
BACKGROUND The patterning cascade model of tooth morphogenesis accounts for shape development through the interaction of a small number of genes. In the model, gene expression both directs development and is controlled by the shape of developing teeth. Enamel knots (zones of nonproliferating epithelium) mark the future sites of cusps. In order to form, a new enamel knot must escape the inhibito...
متن کاملThe inheritance of dental traits in a Chinese population in the United Kingdom.
Dental traits such as those of Carabelli or incisor shovelling have fascinated anthropologists and dentists for many years. This is probably because they are easily observed in both living and skeletal material and they show ethnic differences in frequency which might have a genetic basis. If, however, these traits are to be of any value their mode of inheritance must be understood and so some ...
